Am I a green traveller? How to carry the responsibility with you!

In an era where sustainable choices are becoming increasingly important, even our travel habits can have a positive impact on the planet. As passionate travellers, we have the opportunity to embrace eco-conscious practices and make a difference while exploring the world.
Soulta Beauty here today, we are so excited to be writing to you in partnership with Bouclème. If you haven’t heard from us yet, no hard feelings, ok? But just to briefly summarize, we produce the best-vegan-eco-friendly-light-soft-amazing satin hair accessories! Don’t worry, we’ll tell you a bit more about ourselves and our products soon (which you’ll see, will love your curls and vice-versa) but first let’s talk about a very important issue!
When we decided to get together for a collaboration, there were so many topics we’d like to talk about but the one that seems so relevant now with the sun shining outside is TRAVEL! Since we all look forward to our holidays throughout the year, why not take some time to reflect about the implications our travelling habits have on nature and how can we combine protecting both our wavy, curly or coily hair and the environment? The answer is: it’s possible!

We should all know that when we travel, we cause great impact on the environment: we increase the level of our carbon footprint, we pollute the air and consume food and products when we aren’t aware of their source or how sustainable they are. The reason behind it might be the language barrier or perhaps that we really don’t know how to become a better ‘green traveller’.
Of course, it doesn’t mean we need to stop exploring the beautiful world out there, but there are ways to make trips more sustainable, including where you decide to go, what kind of transportation you will use to get there, and, very importantly, what you pack – which is where we shine!

Questioning your packing style is a very simple first step for you to start taking on board, literally. No, it’s nothing to do with how you fold them - although this might help fitting that gorgeous long dress and high heels. The fact is: how we select and pack our must-have beauty items that we cannot go without while travelling is of vital importance!
Soulta and Bouclème not only produce and create the best hair products and accessories out there, we also are equally committed to look after the environment and reduce the negative impact our industry causes to our collective home. And why should you take us with you on your next adventure? Because we have the below promises in our company’s cultures:

Protecting nature and polluting less; Bouclème’s products are at least 92% plant based and are biodegradable. They’re free from silicones, sulphates, PEGs, parabens, mineral oils, petroleum and phthalates. Scents are 100% nature’s own, perfumer-blended essential oils. Now Soulta’s raw materials are not blends, so we only utilize 100% cotton or 100% polyester, reducing pollution. By 2024 we also aim to use 100% recycled polyester.
Package matters: Boucléme’s bottles contain between 30% and 90% recycled plastic or bioplastic (from sugar cane). When you're done, they can be recycled. Their one litre bottles have a reusable dispenser cap. Simply buy refills (available in the UK only for now) and save plastic. Soulta’s is a zero waste company! Currently we recycle or correctly dispose 100% of the waste we produce, and we chose to work with paper packaging for our products, as it is recyclable and biodegradable in most countries we ship to.
Supporting our communities: 20p of every Bouclème’s Revive 5 Hair Oil goes to supporting Malaika. This non-profit organisation is committed to improving access to education, water and healthcare for young girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Soulta is the creator and sole supporter of the project “Amor por Costura” (Love for Sewing in English) in south Brazil which provides free sewing training for members of low-income families.
Now that you know why we should be your travel companions, we want to share some practical tips on how to sustainably pack for your travels, ensuring you have everything you need for your travel wardrobe, elevating your style whilst staying true to your commitment to sustainability:

1. Make a packing list: lists are the new black! Before you start packing, create a detailed packing list. This will help you plan and avoid overpacking, ensuring you only bring the essentials. Be mindful of the climate, activities, and cultural norms of your destination, so you pack appropriate clothing and gear. By planning ahead, you can avoid the last-minute urge to buy unnecessary items, reducing both waste and unnecessary consumption. Check our recommended products to add to the list right now:

- Bouclème’s Revive 5 Hair Oil is a weightless hair oil that protects against heat and UV rays for glossy and bouncy curls. Keeps dryness and damage at bay.

2. Choose sustainable luggage: Invest in high-quality, sustainable luggage that is durable and built to last. Opt for suitcases or backpacks made from eco-friendly materials such as recycled fabrics, organic cotton, or hemp. Look for brands that prioritize ethical manufacturing processes and fair-trade practices. By choosing sustainable luggage, you reduce the need for frequent replacements and contribute to the reduction of waste in the long run. Something to last for you next trip and the following:

- Bouclème’s Intensive Moisture Treatment is a great deep conditioner treatment to enhance and strengthen curls because keeping your hair moisturized is so important in the summer.

3. Pack light and minimize single-use Items: Packing light is a fundamental principle of sustainable travel. The less weight you carry, the lower your carbon emissions will be, especially if you're flying. Try and eliminate single-use plastics and disposable items from your packing list. Stick to the essentials and versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits. Prioritize multi-functional items that serve multiple purposes, such as a sarong that can be used as a beach cover-up, a scarf, or a picnic blanket. By packing light, you also minimize the strain on your body and make your travels more comfortable.

4. Pack Eco-Friendly Toiletries: Traditional toiletries often come in plastic packaging and contain harmful chemicals. Choose from eco-friendly alternatives such as biodegradable shampoo, conditioners, and other hair care products that come in compostable or recyclable packaging. Use refillable travel-sized containers to carry your favourite products and avoid purchasing travel-sized single-use items. Remember to pack only the necessary quantities of toiletries to minimize waste and leave a smaller footprint.

By incorporating brands, products and hair accessories into your life and travels that are committed to protecting nature, you not only enhance your personal style and ethics but also support sustainable beauty and local communities. So, pack your bags, and embark on your sustainable travel adventure with style and purpose!

Want to do more? Here are some quick tips:
Try choosing to explore destinations closer to where you live and by utilizing the railway rather than airway or the highway are a good way to start.
You can also check, if you are planning to go long-haul, what accommodations or hotels have eco-friendly practices in place, or checking countries that governments have concrete laws to reduce mass tourism effects.
If you have a bucket list, why not consider volunteering in a country where exchange programs exist? Such as the Environmental Sustainability Volunteer Project in Puerto Rico - San Juan. If that has tickled your fancy, there are many other amazing environmental volunteer opportunities on this link.
